How FHO+ Billing started
FHO+ Billing started when Ontario introduced changes to the Family Health Organization model, commonly referred to as FHO+.
As part of the new model, FHO physicians began billing for the time they spend on direct patient care, indirect patient care, and clinical administration. That also meant keeping track of those hours, understanding the different limits, and knowing what was actually eligible to be billed.
Both of my parents are physicians, so I got to see fairly quickly what that change actually looked like in practice. The rules themselves were not necessarily the problem. It was keeping track of everything and understanding how the different categories and limits worked without constantly going back through the calculations.
During March break, I remember having a conversation about it while we were out walking on a trail. Hearing how the new system worked, and where some of the confusion was coming from, made me wonder if there was a simpler way to handle it.
I had already built a few smaller apps by that point, so I decided to try making something myself.
At first, FHO+ Billing was really just meant to solve that one problem for my family. But once I started building it, I realized that the same thing could probably make life easier for a lot of other FHO physicians too.
Making the complicated part simpler
What started as a fairly small project quickly turned into a much bigger one.
I spent a lot of time researching the FHO+ billing rules, working through the calculations, and figuring out how to turn all of that into something that felt simple to use. A physician should not need to work through every calculation themselves just to know how much time they can bill.
That became the main idea behind FHO+ Billing: take care of the complicated part and make the day-to-day experience as straightforward as possible.
Within a few weeks, I had the first version ready and published.
Since then, FHO+ Billing has continued to grow. More than 2,000 physicians now use it, and I have kept working on the mobile app, refining the experience, adding improvements, and building a web version as well.
It has changed quite a bit from the small app I originally started building for my parents, but the reason for building it has not really changed.
FHO+ billing can be complicated. FHO+ Billing is meant to make it much easier.
